I'm a Navy wife and mother of six children, ages 19, 17, 16, 15, 13, and 11. We currently reside in Colardo (where I am the MomWriters Regional Host) with our three cats, Trent, Daria, and Quinn. I began writing seven years ago when the muse haunted me with a story in my sleep one night. It developed into a picture book manuscript. Since then, I have written eight picture books, three novels, and numerous short stories and poems. Although I write primarily fiction, to date I've only sold non-fiction: Domestic Bliss at Suite101.com. I also publish a family newsletter. One of my short stories placed 64th in the short story category of a Writer's Digest Writing Contest, and one of my novel manuscripts was a semi-finalist in the Austin Writers' League Manuscript Contest. I'm a member of the IWWG, SCBWI, and NWA.

I've been writing as long as I can remember, my first award won in 2nd grade sealed my fate. I started writing for publication in 1990. I love to write everything that comes into my head, but I'm really partial to children's writing (humor and fantasy most of all), religious articles, personal experience articles and essays, and occasional short stories for adults. I'm most proud of my short story included in children's author, Bruce Coville, anthology book of unicorn stories published by Scholastic Books, A GLORY OF UNICORNS. I also enjoy writing about writing, speaking and helping beginning
writers begin and encouraging other writers to keep going.
She worked at the local grocery store part-time during school. Kathy went on to work in the Hosiery Industry, which is one of the degrees that she had earned. "I could run a hosiery mill from one end to the other. And I did!" she says. She went from working a machine to running the company. Times came and times went and the hosiery industry just about dwindled. She went on to run an office for a furniture company, before they decided to close their doors. Finally she went to work for a textile company. "I love my job, but my true passion is to write," she adds, "I love to use my imagination and paper is the best place to put it." Kathy's passion started when she was in third grade. She won a poem contest that was ran throughout the entire elementary school. "I was shocked that I won because I had never won anything before and actually didn't know I had it in me," she tells. She has written numerous poems, since then, throughout the years. She met her husband, Shane, while she was working in the plant of a hosiery mill in 1991. They went on to get married in March of 1993. They moved around several times throughout the years until they settled down in Maiden NC to have a family. In February of 1998 they had a beautiful baby boy named Elijah. This was a tremendous time for Kathy. She loved spending time with her son at home, but she had to go back to work to make ends meet. During her spare time she started writing short stories and selling articles to a local newspaper. After several rejections, duh, she has finally received a contract to publish one of her short stories, named Andy LoStones Adventures in Kill Devil Hills, a story for young adults due to be out in 2004. Kathy is a volunteer for local charities, a co-leader for the Maiden Explorers 4-H club, a member of CornerStone Church, and has won several awards from different poetry contests. She has also had poems published in several anthologies.

I am a nut for history and genealogy. Ask me sometime, I'll give you the low down on the many terrrribly innnnterestin characters I descend from. I love old Bugs Bunny, Anything Star Trek or vaguely Celtic. My music collection is, shall we say, ecclectic. Celtic harp, Louisville Jazz, Christian Contemporary, Southern Fried Rock, Country and Broadway. Writing is something I have been doing for a very long time. I just wasn't paid for it until July, 1997. Growing up on a dairy farm in south-central Penna. I worked every day until the work was done. As an adult I worked two and three jobs at a time to make the ends look at each other. Then I got married. Suddenly things changed, I wasn't my own person anymore. I had to think of someone else regularly. No problem, I still worked and kept the house. Then I got pregnant. We decided that I would be at home with our children, one of us should be and David made more money. So, there I was with a perpetually damp, warm, mewling, cooing boy-child. Four walls and the boob-tube. I would rather chew glass than do housework. I started going quite loopy. Another child in short order and a grandmother under foot and the process seemed irreversible. As the children became more independent I started looking for ways to bring some income to the house. Store clerk, Watkins representative, part-time secretary. Didn't much like any of them and then the ugly truth came out. David's opinion of the whole affair was, "You don't bring enough money in to make a difference, all it does is put us up a tax-bracket." Well, the fur flew, the tears flowed and life was generally miserable for a few days. Then I found a want ad for a correspondent at the morning paper neatly cut and laying on my pillow. (He's soooo romantic =o) From covering school board meetings I have expanded to be the unofficial history and agriculture correspondent. I have been on the cover four times since May (twice this month, Dec.) and had the cover of the 'Friday' magazine three times since Sept. It is very gratifying to be a 'productive' member of the household again. It is a relief to be among thinking adults on a regular basis. And yet I still get to be at home with my children, a better mom for the pressure valve my writing has become. So far my writing has been confined to the York Daily Record http://www.ydr.com and I have learned a great deal with out paying for it. My next move is to the magazines. Queries are being prepared and articles are burning a hole in my file drawers. Here I go. . . Email me privately at: momkate1@gte.net
Although she has multiple projects going on at a time, her favorite writings are, by far, those which deal with the Lord, Jesus Christ, and His teachings. Says Koni, "If I can touch one heart through my words, my life will have been worthwhile." You can see samples of Koni's work at her author site at http://www.konihelton.com/
