Meet Momwriter
What is it like to be a worm living inside an apple? Maybe she doesn't know from firsthand experience, but this was the subject of the first story that Bobbi Dempsey remembers ever writing. Reading since the age of two and writing shortly after that, Bobbi has gone from writing about worms in apples to write about a myriad of topics including consumer investigations and crime reporting. "I wasn't too comfortable with the crime writing," Bobbi admits. "Skulking around in the woods looking at dead bodies really wasn't for me." She was also uneasy about her experience investigating Mafia ties to local high-profile figures. "This is, after all, an area where people have been blown up in their cars and homes have been firebombed." A less dangerous writing experience, Bobbi enjoyed the time she spent doing consumer reporting. She admits to using her trademark wit and her own unusual testing methods on the products she wrote about. "My evaluation of plastic backpacks included stabbing them with pencils, kicking them down the stairs, freezing them and filling them with weights and dragging them down the middle of the street." First published in a local magazine in 1990, Bobbie's career has enabled her to have a number of incredible experiences. Some of the most memorable were getting to spend the night in a mosh pit at an Aerosmith concert, taking SWAT training and making a speech at the White House. In addition to all of the articles she writes for magazines such as Parents, Woman's Own, Family Circle, Bobbi is also seriously working on three non-fiction books. They encompass such topics as the life of a former pro wrestler as well as the story of a woman who fell into the line of work of rescuing children who have been kidnapped by non-custodial parents. Bobbi credits other female writers, such as S.E. Hinton and Judy Blume, as being the inspiration for her in her writing career. Born in New York City, Bobbi has lived in Buffalo and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Currently she resides in Drifton, PA with her husband, Jack, to whom she has been married for 12 years. Together, they have three sons: John, Nick and Brandon, ages 11, 10 and 8 respectively. Some fun facts about Bobbi: She and her family have a dog (half Shepherd, half wolf) named "Tyson" -- because he likes to bite. The best book she's read in the last year is "The Dirt" about Motley Crue. Says Bobbi, "[It] impressed me simply because I'm amazed that those guys can remember so many details, despite their drug-induced haze." Her favorite ways to relax when she isn't writing include walking and reading. Bobbi confesses to be addicted to contests. She also collects autographs. Her biggest pet peeves include long lines at stores, telemarketers and online pop-up ads. Her most memorable vacation is a trip her family took to California. "I'd always wanted to go there...and I won the trip, so the fact that it was free made it even better!" One of Bobbi's favorite quotes is: "That which doesn't kill me will make me stronger." (Old adage...author unidentified upon search.) When asked what she would do if someone handed her $100, she replied, "Probably take my kids somewhere, but maybe I'd save just enough to buy myself a ridiculously overpriced cappuccino."
