Meet Momwriter
Parents and children - a natural combination, not only in life, but specifically in the writing life of Susan Younan Attiyah. Susan specializes in writing articles on the subject of Parent Education, and she is a children's book author as well. Says Susan of this writing combination, " I like when I am able to help a parent with a certain topic, yet I love to make a child smile by my book(s)." Susan has been writing since the sixth grade when she won a short story contest. She spent the remainder of her school years writing and editing her school newspapers. Her professional writing career began two years ago with an article for the Glendora Community News. With the encouragement of her husband, Jay, Susan decided to pursue her dream of writing. Married for nine years, she and Jay have two sons, Georgey, age seven and Jonathan, age four. Though she lived in Michigan until the age of 16, Susan and her family now reside in Glendora, California. Susan's first children's picture book, "I'll Never Find Anything in Here!" was recently released. The book was illustrated by Debra Lynn Lovitt and published by Neighborhood Press, Inc. You will find more information about her book at her web site, http://www.susanattiyah.homestead.com/, and Susan welcomes e-mail from any of her readers (sya90@aol.com). When she's busy writing, Susan favors working in her office because it has everything she needs, including peace and quiet. When putting words to paper, Susan likes to do it the old-fashioned way, writing everything longhand and then transferring it to her computer. "I guess it's a habit I won't be breaking anytime soon." Other than spending time with her family, Susan likes to spend some of her down time working out. "I have recently begun Yoga. I have to say I love it. It gives me peace of mind." She also admits to being addicted to speed walking and kickboxing. "Another love of mine is reading," says Susan. "I could sit in the children's section in a bookstore for hours." As she has been encouraged by others, Susan offers these words of encouragement to aspiring writers: "Begin writing for the love of it...once you see your byline, you want more, but begin by writing for the love of it. Also...find some kind of writing group. I belong to Momwriters. I couldn't be where I am today without this group...as a matter of fact, I have them in my book under acknowledgments." Some fun facts about Susan: Pets: A rabbit named Snowy. Reading: Her favorite adult author is Danielle Steele. Her favorite children's author is Robert Munsch. "The best book I've read this year is "Silent Revenge" by Glenda Ivy. Favorite way to relax: Sitting quietly on a blanket on the grass, drinking something warm. Most memorable vacation: "Jay and I have taken so many beautiful vacations from Hawaii to Cancun to Vegas, Tahoe and many others...but one vacation that stands out is the time we went to Syria. To go to a completely different country than America and see where my parents and husband grew up was truly amazing. We stayed there for two months and I learned so much on that trip." The #1 thing on her wish list: "My husband and I are house hunting! I would love to find our new family home to raise my kids in."
