Meet Momwriter
Born and raised in Long Beach, California, she's a city girl at heart, but Sharon Waldrop lives - and writes - happily in the San Bernardino Mountains. Ninety minutes east of L.A., the Waldrops have lived for the past five years in this rural mountain community. "I love living here," says Sharon, "There are no streetlights and we have four seasons." Sharon's husband of almost eight years is Bill, an investigator for their county's District Attorney's office. He is also on the SWAT team and teaches one night a week at the Sheriff's Academy. Their children include Amber (14), Rachel (10), (both from Sharon's first marriage) Ian (6) and Kymberlie (3). Sharon has been writing for two years. Her first publishing credit was a piece she wrote for the online site, "The New Homemaker." Sharon credits fellow Momwriter Sheri Wallace as being the person to whom she can attribute her writing success, as it was Sheri who encouraged her to submit the piece. "That clip helped me get my first paying assignment for Oxygen Media's 'MomsOnline'," says Sharon. Since that time, she has been paid for about 100 articles. "I earned enough money from writing to take my oldest daughter on a special mother/daughter trip to New York for her 14th birthday. I thought this was a milestone because it was right before she started high school." Sharon writes about parenting and health issues as well as human resources topics, as she used to work as a Director of Human Resources before deciding to become a SAHM. Of all the work she has done, she is most proud of her first publication in a print magazine -- Pregnancy Magazine. "That snowballed into an essay and three additional assignments for Pregnancy." All of the writing Sharon does is done at her computer, which is right in the middle of their living room. "We have a very busy household...and finding the peace and quiet I need to write is a major challenge!" The lack of quiet doesn't seem to have stifled Sharon's creativity. "I do have a journal where I write down ideas. I have found that topics to write about surround me everywhere, every day." Some fun facts about Sharon: PETS: The Waldrops have an interesting mix of pets that include a St. Bernard, three cats, three rabbits, two chinchillas, two parakeets and an iguana. FAVORITE AUTHOR AND BOOK: Her favorite author is Sidney Sheldon. Her favorite book is "Angela's Ashes" by Frank McCourt. FAVORITE VACATION SPOT: New York City, which she's visited three times. LAST MOVIE SEEN: "Finding Forrester." "I loved it," says Sharon, "and I give it four thumbs up." FAVORITE QUOTE: "Once you are published, you will never be unpublished again." Bonnie Hearn-Hill, published author and editor at the "Fresno Bee." IF SHE COULD SIT DOWN AND TALK TO ANY ONE PERSON - DEAD OR ALIVE - SHE WOULD CHOOSE: Erma Bombeck. "I don't know what I would ask her," admits Sharon, "I would tell her that I own a copy of every book she has ever written." In Sharon's free time, she enjoys spending time with her kids, coaching
soccer, caring for their pets, shopping, going to movies and reading.
On the writing front, Sharon is currently working on two books -- one
novel and one non-fiction.
