The Electronic Writer

Where to find Ezines and Newsletters
By Kyle Looby
(Sept 2000)

As a freelance Internet writer, I make most of my income writing for ezines and newsletters. But finding these jobs takes a little more searching than finding print markets. Print guides are easily available at the library, bookstore, and online, but you have to know where to look to find listings exclusively online writing jobs.

There are essentially five ways to find potential jobs and markets for ezines and newsletters. The first is job boards. These are job listings that can be found on ezines especially for writers. Most of these list online jobs, although there are some print venues there too. You can also find such job and market listings on general job search websites; freelance jobs are sprinkled throughout the listings of staff jobs. This is also true for classified ads, which can be found on various writing websites. To access potential writing opportunities for ezine and newsletters, check out the job boards and classified ads on these ezines and websites for writers:

Another way to access writing opportunities is to sign up for newsletters (AKA mailing lists) for writers. Most of these have job listings, as well as other valuable information for writers. Most of the ezines and sites for writers above have newsletters, and here are some other good newsletters for freelancers:

The Write Moves: send an email to thewritemoves-subscribe@topica.com
Writemarkets: http://www.egroups.com/group/writemarkets
Workforwriters: http://www.egroups.com/group/workforwriters
The Write List: http://www.egroups.com/group/Write_List
Working writers: http://www.egroups.com/group/WorkingWriters
Write at Home: http://www.egroups.com/group/WriteAtHome

The fourth way to find ezines and newsletters to write for is to check out your favorite websites and newsletters. Think about your hobbies and passions. What interests you? I bet there are a number of ezines, newsletters, and websites out there dedicated to your interests. Surf the web for your favorite sites, and chances are that they accept submissions. They'll likely have guidelines listed, too, to help you get started. And don't forget your favorite newsletters. There are lists for every subject imaginable. Subscribe, post, and pretty soon, you'll be ready to contribute an article or two. Where do you find ezines?

There are plenty of opportunities out there for web writers...if you know where to look. And if you don't want to spend more time looking for jobs than writing, check out my newsletter for freelance web writers, The Write Moves. It's free and lists the most up-to-date writing jobs and paying markets, as well as news and writing tips. You can subscribe from my website www.allthewritemoves.com.
